Notice how within the same horsepower rating some competing outboards displace more cubic inches. And notice how within the same brand name different horsepower ratings displace the same number of cubic inches. This means the same powerhead is tuned for different power output by fiddling with carburetion and maximum rpm.
Small outboard motor fuel consumption will measure roughly 10-percent of the
horsepower rating in gallons per hour (at Wide-Open-Throttle). In other words, a 10-horsepower outboard will burn about one gallon per hour at WOT, while a 5-hp outboard will burn half that, or about a half-gallon per hour.
